Arrière plan

Telemedicine does not treat patients. It does, however, support healthcare professionals and patients by bridging the distance gap, thereby connecting patients and medical personnel and increasing access to higher-level care.

Given that UN missions have become more robust, it is important to establish connectivity between UN health facilities - Level 1- with access to specialists and diagnosticians not available in smaller settings.

In higher-level UN health facilities—Level 1+ and above—telemedicine can facilitate access to tertiary-level treatments by regular liaison with personnel in medical centres of excellence worldwide.

From medical and public health perspectives, telemedicine could also provide information for early warning of outbreaks.
