Sports have always captured the global imagination. But in recent years, greater interest has been directed at the potential of sports to become a conduit for peacebuilding and diplomatic promotion, as witnessed in the Winter Olympics in South Korea, as well as the World Cups in Russia and Qatar. With increasing attention focused on the interlinkages between sports, law, and diplomacy, there is increasing demand for professionals who can understand and navigate the public disputes that marry complex issues around athletes’ rights and regulations, diplomatic issues and political statements, and the law on competition and doping.

Through a blend of theoretical insights, case studies, interactive exercises, and group discussions, this programme aims to empower professionals with the expertise needed to excel in the dynamic realm of international sports governance and diplomacy. Furthermore, the programme includes visits to iconic sports institutions and organizations that will enrich participants' understanding of international sports diplomacy and sport governance, such as the International Olympic Committee and UEFA (Union of European Football Associations).

By the conclusion of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize different types of leadership and decision-making dimensions;
  • Acquire a good knowledge of negotiation mechanisms;
  • Enhance their negotiation skills and ability to influence others;
  • Explain the historical evolution of protocols and their ever-growing significance;
  • Apply advanced interpersonal communication techniques to create a lasting first impression in diverse and multicultural settings;
  • Describe the dynamic relationship between protocol and sports diplomacy, and their impact on international relations;
  • Apply an appropriate analytical approach to understand the role of Sport Mega Events and international governing bodies (e.g., International Olympic Committee IOC, Federation International Football Association FIFA) as pivotal actors in the sporting ecosystem;
  • Outline the realms of Sports Governance, Law, and Ethics, while understanding the intricate relationship between Sport and Society;
  • Describe sport's critical role in global economic diplomacy, its function as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy, and its effectiveness in engaging in public diplomacy;
  • Outline the collaborative strategies that all stakeholders in the sports ecosystem can employ to foster responsible sport practices grounded in international human rights principles
  • Describe the opportunities and challenges experienced by stakeholders involved in sports delivery and hosting major events.
