Objectifs du cours

The overall objective of the YLF project is to contribute to nuclear disarmament and global peace and security by (1) bringing youth to Hiroshima and Nagasaki to learn from the cities’ experiences and (2) enhancing youth leadership capacity in the field of nuclear disarmament.

Contexte

The United Nations Institutions for Training and Research (UNITAR) signed an Agency-to-Agency Agreement with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) to jointly implement the UNODA “Youth Leader Fund – For A World Without Nuclear Weapons (YLF)” project. As an implementing partner, UNITAR would support the Hiroshima and Nagasaki study tour for YLF youth through (1) handling travel logistics for 50 participants from around the world, (2) arranging travel for up to 50 individuals within Japan to participate in a youth conference on 3 July 2026, (3) providing logistical support for the study tour in Japan, and (4) organizing meetings with hibakusha and other local stakeholders.

The study tour was designed to bring together 50 selected youth, including policymakers, campaigners, educators and journalists, to Hiroshima and Nagasaki from 29 June to 3 July, 2026. The project aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and capacity regarding nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation topics. The study tour gives participants the opportunity to meet with hibakusha, local authorities and activists to learn about the humanitarian impacts and consequences of nuclear weapon use.

Additionally, the study tour will include an International Youth Conference in Hiroshima, which aims to gather over 100 young people, including study tour participants and local youth. The goal of the conference is for these youth to develop concrete outcomes and action points towards achieving a world without nuclear weapons.
