Integrating Environmental, Social, and Human Rights Protection into the Governance of the Mining Sector
Increasingly government authorities dealing with mining need to have more than a technical knowledge of mining to do their job well. They need a broad understanding of the economic, environmental, social and human rights issues at every stage of the mining cycle and updated approaches and tools to manage them. By the end of the course you will be further down that path. You will have gained skills in identifying and applying core sustainability concepts, approaches and tools to improve mining governance in your country.
This course introduces you to ideas and tools to improve the sustainability of the mining sector by improving mining governance. It focuses on explaining the why’s and how’s of integrating environmental, social and human rights protection into mining governance.
At the end of the course participants should be able to:
Identify international frameworks and concepts on sustainable development relevant to the mining sector
Explain how environmental, social and human rights issues play a role in mining governance
Identify approaches and tools used to integrate environmental, social and human rights protection into the mining cycle
Explain concepts, approaches and tools of stakeholders’ participation in decision-making process in mining governance
Recognize the role of different authorities in governing the mining sector
- Module 1 introduces big ideas and important concepts from relevant international instruments. It also introduces you to the 8-step mining cycle that we will use throughout the course. The mining cycle starts from the very first step of developing a national mining strategy all the way through to post-closure of mining operations.
- Module 2 highlights tools and approaches building on the concepts developed in Module 1 that you can use to integrate environmental, social and human rights protection. The module is structured around each step of the mining cycle, briefly explaining at least one approach or tool that can be used at each step.
- Module 3 explains the importance of engaging with and being accountable to stakeholders as a key strategy for improving the sustainability of mining. It builds on Principle 10 that will be explained in Module 1.
This self-paced course promotes a dynamic approach through lessons and multi media materials, stimulating critical thinking. It provides flexibility, since you will be able to complete the course at your own pace and time. Contents and activities are practice-oriented and under a self-learning approach. You will also learn through practical example, scenarios and knowledge assessments.
Government officials, representatives of international organizations and NGO, protected areas staff, academics and private sector professionals with an interest in development, climate change, and nature conservation.

Once you meet the passing criteria for the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion jointly delivered by UNITAR, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and UNDP.
