Increasingly government authorities dealing with mining need to have more than a technical knowledge of mining to do their job well.  They need a broad understanding of the economic, environmental, social and human rights issues at every stage of the mining cycle and updated approaches and tools to manage them. By the end of the course you will be further down that path.  You will have gained skills in identifying and applying core sustainability concepts, approaches and tools to improve mining governance in your country.

Please note that the 2019 edition of the course is now closed. You can enrol in the new edition at: https://www.unitar.org/event/full-catalog/integrating-environmental-social-and-human-rights-protection-governance-mining-sector-0.

  • Module 1 introduces big ideas and important concepts from relevant international instruments.  It also introduces you to the 8-step mining cycle that we will use throughout the course.  The mining cycle starts from the very first step of developing a national mining strategy all the way through to post-closure of mining operations.
  • Module 2 highlights tools and approaches building on the concepts developed in Module 1 that you can use to integrate environmental, social and human rights protection.  The module is structured around each step of the mining cycle, briefly explaining at least one approach or tool that can be used at each step.
  • Module 3 explains the importance of engaging with and being accountable to stakeholders as a key strategy for improving the sustainability of mining.   It builds on Principle 10 that will be explained in Module 1.
