Background

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming global governance, trade, and development, creating both opportunities and challenges for the international community. To ensure AI systems are trustworthy, safe, and interoperable, international standards developed by organizations such as ISO, IEC, ITU, and IEEE play a crucial role in shaping ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI governance. In this context, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in collaboration with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is organizing a Briefing Session for the Diplomatic Community on AI Standards to enhance diplomats’ understanding of the role of international standardization in multilateral cooperation. The session will provide an overview of the global AI standards landscape, their implications for diplomacy and human rights, and practical examples of how standards are applied in organizational governance and in promoting participation from the Global South. Through interactive discussions, case illustrations, and exchanges with experts, the event will explore how diplomats can engage in and influence standardization processes, contributing to global efforts toward responsible, inclusive, and ethical AI development.
