Event Objectives

The aim of this advocacy presentation is to inform key global actors on new developments in the field of trauma treatment and the urgent needs these can address.

Background

Trauma is a global burden, negatively affecting human development, global development, and even world peace. Trauma has not received the attention it deserves, nor its treatment the support it needs. The contribution that large-scale trauma treatment could make to increasing social, economic, and cultural productivity, as well as individual educability, creativity, and well-being, could be historic. Recent developments have the potential to bring this treatment to scale, to humanitarian and peace operations personnel, and to the general population. This self-paced advocacy module aims to raise awareness and influence policy decisions to support the implementation of these new developments, and help bring an end to the insidious and needless suffering that trauma wreaks on the world.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the four types of stress and traumatic stress.
  • Illustrate the global burden of trauma.
  • Describe three approaches to trauma treatment/care used in this module.
  • Describe three factors that would facilitate the scaling up of trauma treatment.
  • Summarize why global trauma should be included in the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Recall the elements of an effective Global Plan for Trauma Treatment.
  • Advocate for the expansion of trauma treatment to key stakeholders.
