EO4SD Fragility Training of Trainers
With the recent development in Earth Observation (EO) technologies there are more and more satellite orbiting the Earth and many of them record important data. The price of using such technologies has decreased considerably in the past few years, with some of it even becoming freely available.
The Earth Observation for Sustainable Development Fragility, Conflict and Security (EO4SD FCS) project aims to support fragile states thanks to the use of earth observation (EO) technologies. The consortium of organisations that take part in this initiative assist international financial institutions (IFIs), fragile states governments and other relevant stakeholders by delivering services and building capacity in the field of EO.
To meet this challenge, UNITAR is offering a training of trainers (ToT) from 20-24 May in Geneva. The course is designed to accommodate selected participants from various organizations of the EO4SD FCS consortium. It was created to cater for their needs and allow them to be fully prepared to undertake the training segment of the project.
At the end of the course participants should be able to:

- Analyze the target audience
- Write SMART learning objectives
- Explain how adults learn
- Create an effective learning environment
- Write a session plan
- Select the most appropriate methods
- Prepare a webinar
- Deliver engaging presentations
- Explain the importance of effective non-verbal and verbal communication
- Develop effective visual aids
- Explain the principles of facilitation
- Use different facilitation and debrief techniques
- Prepare the delivery of a training
- Conduct a level I and II evaluation
The course will provide participants with a theoretical and practical understanding of essential training skills. It will also allow them to acquire the necessary knowledge to be able to train EO4SD FCS clients in a variety of the project’s services.
The first 3 days will cover essential training-related topics including audience analysis, learning objectives, effective learning environment, webinars, public speaking and visual aids. The fourth day (Thursday 23 May) will be dedicated to practice. This will allow various participants to present some of their key services to ensure that all consortium organizations are able to teach the basics of the main project’s activities in the future. It will also provide an opportunity to apply pedagogical skills acquired during the first 3 days. On the final day, trainees will undergo evaluation and reinforce their knowledge of main learning takeaways.
This is a full-time, face-to-face course with lectures and exercises. It is divided into 20 sessions over 5 days. The average workload per day is likely to be around 6-7 hours. The training is designed in a way to have a balanced approach between theoretical and practical teaching methods consisting in PowerPoint presentations, videos, interactive sessions and exercises. UNITAR-UNOSAT will set up a community of practice platform soon after the ToT to maximize the learning experience of participants and provide all required technical backstopping and assistance to training participants after the training.
The course is designed to accommodate experienced professionals in the field of GIS from the various organizations of the EO4SD FCS consortium.
