The United Nations (UN) recognizes the critical role of children and youth in sustainable development. Under the 2012 declaration titled, The Future We Want, the General Assembly “stress[es] the importance of the active participation of young people in decision-making processes, as [global issues] have a deep impact on present and future generations, and as the contribution of children and youth is vital to the achievement of sustainable development. [They] also recognize the need to promote intergenerational dialogue and solidarity by recognizing their views.” Likewise, one of the four pillars of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) is the right to participation. As members of society, and both drivers and beneficiaries of change, children and the youth have the right to express and exercise their agency on issues that affect them. In 2022, the Philippines recorded 31.4 million youth ages 15-30 years old. As a significant part of the population, it is paramount that policies and initiatives are not only directed towards the youth but that these also engage and inspire them to play a more proactive role in achieving sustainable development.
