This specialized module presents the topic of climate change in urban areas. The urban population in the world is increasing and that is why cities have a decisive role in the fight against climate change. This module explains how climate change affects cities and how they contribute to climate change. In addition, this module evaluates the attention that must be paid to climate change adaptation and mitigation when making urban plans and determining concrete measures. Several examples of the renewal role that cities can play in coping with climate change are presented.
To present the theoretical and practical bases on adaptation to climate change and the role of ecosystem services as a strategy to adapt to climate change.
At the end of this specialized module, participants will be able to:
- Describe urban trends for the 21st century.
- Describe the renewal role that cities play in achieving green development that is resilient to climate change.
- Explain how climate change affects urban areas and how they contribute to climate change.
- Explain how adaptation and mitigation of climate change can be assessed in urban plans.
- Identify appropriate adaptation and mitigation measures to urban areas.
The course is comprised of 6 modules as it follows:
1. Cities in the 21st century
2. Effects of climate change on cities
3. Cities, causes of climate change
4. Integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation into urban plans
5. Climate change adaptation and mitigation in practice
6. Description of the main initiatives related to climate change and cities
Each module takes an average of 2 hours to complete and it has 4 to 5 learning objectives. A short quiz at the end of each Module allows you to verify if you have achieved the learning objectives. You can decide to take all Modules, or choose to select those that most interest you. Once all 6 Modules with general character are completed, you will receive a certificate of completion. All Modules are also available as downloadable PowerPoint presentations or PDF files for offline study or training purposes.
• Officials in national ministries, provincial departments and local authorities responsible for the development and implementation of urban development policies, programs or projects and / or working to incorporate climate change;
• Private sector managers and civil society organizations working on climate change and / or urban development;
• Teaching staff, researchers and students, and
• Public in general.
