The 2030 Agenda presents an excellent opportunity for the private sector to demonstrate the central role it plays in the eradication of hunger which is encapsulated in Goal 2 - End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. The importance of strong partnerships between sectors and the multilateral systems and the significant role that farmers play in global food security needs to be highlighted and underscored. Sustainable agriculture and farmers must be central to policy decisions that affect food security and nutrition.

The overriding objective of the seminar would be to raise awareness of the pivotal role played by cooperatives in implementing the SDGs and their direct impact on the Goals 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8.

Toward this end, using the above five SDGs as reference points, the seminar will explore the questions of:

  • What are Cooperatives and how do they work?
  • Why are Cooperatives different?
  • Why are Cooperatives important to agriculture development?
  • What is the role of Cooperatives in Sustainable Development?
  • Member State Representatives.
  • CSO and NGO representatives.
  • UN staff dealing with relevant matters.
  • Business and farmer representatives dealing with relevant matters.
