Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of 21st century diplomacy and international governance. Given the many different stakeholders and communities who have roles to play, it is a contemporary challenge with regard to its demand on interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and languages, and the personal capacities needed to combine these so as to make diplomatic sense and success. Competing interests, political tensions, and challenges of the world today, such as the economic recession and competing development priorities, mean that negotiation deadlocks are rife and ways to overcome them are becoming more and more challenging to find. The workshop will include analysis of the results of COP 21 and COP 22 as well as preparations for COP 23.

After the workshop, participants should be able to:

- Understand the complexity of multilateral negotiations within the UNFCCC.

- Become familiar with challenges related to mitigation, adaptation and climate finance.

- Develop negotiation skills, specific to the UNFCCC negotiations.

- Understand the issues play for COP23.

The workshop will adopt a participatory approach and include presentations, panel sessions and discussions on the various topics on the agenda. Adequate time will be allocated for participants to interact with resource persons. For this activity, UNITAR is pleased to collaborate with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

This workshop is open to members of Permanent Missions and delegates of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and other government officials as well as to representatives of international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations who are involved in climate change negotiations.

The workshop will take place at the International Emvirontment House
