In light of the continuously evolving migration situation, particularly in Kuwait, UP-CIFAL Philippines sees the urgent, great need to examine the numerous perspectives on the phenomenon and verify facts about recent events in order to make recommendations on possible courses of action and next steps forward.

Broadly, the event serves as a venue for migration practitioners and scholars to interact and develop both research-based policy recommendations, as well as a socially relevant migration research agenda. It is the first in a series of dialogues and consultations on the topic.

The activity aims to:

  1. Verify facts on the ongoing migration crisis situation in Kuwait, specifically the ban on deployment of Filipino migrants to the country following the death of a Filipino household service worker;
  2. Develop a set of research questions to assess the Philippines’ overseas worker program
  3. Establish stronger ties between migration practitioners in migration scholars in order to enhance the collaborative efforts to produce policy recommendations, particularly on migration governance and migrant reintegration
