Background

The United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, which led to the establishment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals serve as a framework for countries to align efforts toward fostering peace, prosperity, and global partnership for people and the planet. They represent a universal call for action to ensure holistic development for present and future generations.  As the National University, the University of the Philippines (UP) affirms its commitment to the SDGs by establishing the University of the Philippines-Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders Philippines (UP-CIFAL Philippines). As the research, training, and capacity-building hub for sustainable development in the Philippines, UP-CIFAL endeavors to support UP’s role as a national leader in SDG advocacy and implementation.  As part of its Needs Assessment Exercise, UP-CIFAL will conduct the UP Sustainability Caravan on 16–17 October 2025 at UP Tacloban, with the theme “Transforming the Future through Synergetic Sustainability.” The Caravan aims to deepen participants’ understanding of the SDGs, inspire integration into academic, research, and extension functions, and foster stronger collaboration between UP-CIFAL and the CUs.  Insights from the caravan will also guide the development of an SDG Policy Framework and Roadmap for the entire UP System, supporting more coordinated and impactful initiatives.

Learning Objectives

Enrich the knowledge of the participants about the history, principles, and other salient features of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 UN Agenda Inspire the participants on how they can implement the SDGs within their respective CU’s academic, research, and extension functions;  Motivate the participants to apply what they have learned through a workshop activity, and Identify and strengthen potential areas of cooperation between UP-CIFAL and the CUs towards sustainable development
