The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a principal training arm of the United Nations, working in every region of the world. We empower individuals, governments and organizations through knowledge and learning to effectively overcome contemporary global challenges. 
UNITAR offers various training and capacity-development activities in the thematic areas of Capacity for the 2030 Agenda, Strengthen multilateralism; Promote economic development and social inclusion; Advance environmental sustainability and green development; Promote sustainable peace; and Research and Technology Applications.
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has created an innovative curriculum that offers a transformative learning experience focused on diplomacy. This cutting-edge program provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from seasoned diplomats who are actively shaping international relations and politics. It is specifically designed for students enrolled in disciplines such as Political Science, International Relations, Urban Affairs, or related fields, as well as those who aspire to pursue a career in diplomacy.

With a strong emphasis on gaining a comprehensive understanding of global affairs, this program equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the international landscape. By directly interacting with diplomats and experts in the field, students can gain valuable insights, firsthand experiences, and practical perspectives that go beyond traditional classroom education.

The curriculum offered by UNITAR reflects a forward-thinking approach to education, empowering students to envision a brighter future through diplomacy. It is tailored to foster a deep appreciation for the dynamics of world affairs and cultivates a passion for making a positive impact on a global scale.

Unit I: Academic

  1. UN Study: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • This program offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the functions and organs of the United Nations, with a particular focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their objectives.

This program provides a comprehensive understanding of the United Nations and its functions, with a specific emphasis on the SDGs. Stay updated on the progress and functionalities of the SDGs. Focus on specific UN objectives related to sustainable development and the SDGs. Shape the minds of future international relations professionals and contribute to the long-term leadership of the UN. Students will have the chance to witness UN forums and meetings, providing firsthand exposure to the global decision-making processes.

  1. Current Global Issues
  • This section delves into the pressing global issues that are relevant to students pursuing related academic programs. It offers up-to-date summaries of these issues and the steps being taken to address and improve them. Our aim is to make UNITAR's highly skilled conflict resolution training accessible to the future actors in these fields.

Address critical political, economic, and social issues. Gain insights from diplomats on specific global issues. Analyze the influence of news media and social media on global issues. Explore innovative solutions to contemporary realities in international relations.

  1. Diplomacy and Global Treaties
  • This course aims to educate students on global diplomacy, negotiations, and conflict resolution. It covers topics such as the formation of the United Nations, diplomatic relationships, alliances, and peacekeeping.

Develop a deeper understanding of national and international governance. Gain appreciation for the perspectives of diplomats on global issues. Learn from diplomats directly involved in initiatives or negotiations. Understand international agreements and coalitions between countries. Gain insights into organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), International Monetary Fund (IMF), and International Criminal Court (ICC), among others.

Attendance at online U.N. events, including UNITAR Core Diplomatic Trainings, is highly encouraged.

Through firsthand observation, students will have a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the United Nations, witnessing the diplomatic process in action.

Observe the diplomatic process in real-world settings. Understand the practical functions of the United Nations. Contextualize diplomacy in action, moving beyond hypothetical scenarios. Witness global leaders and gain insights into their visions for a better world.

The Global Diplomacy Initative Program is comprised of 3 hour duration courses, held once a week for 3 months. This program will be conducted two times a year: Spring and Fall.

These courses will be taught by distinguished Ambassadors and high level UN Officials. This program is designed for students pursuing political science, international relations, global studies or related programs and are in their senior year in undergraduate, and any in Masters/ Graduate program. Research students and professionals can also apply. Students of the program will earn a Certificate of Completion. 

This program is tailored for individuals serving as delegates to the United Nations, as well as national change agents and students enrolled in academic programs such as Political Science, International Relations, Urban Affairs, or related fields. It is open to undergraduate, graduate, and research-level students.

Sessions are tentatively scheduled to take place every Friday from 10:00 am – 01:00 pm EST (TBC)
