The aim of this course will be to facilitate a better understanding of Disarmament for the benefit of Member States under the Disarmament Agenda and development of International Peace and Security. A segment of the interactive discussion will include substantive and technical activities organized by the Office for Disarmament Affairs in support of disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control.

The goal of the course will be to ready Member States for the UN Disarmament Commission that will convene in New York UNHQ in April 2019, organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). The Course will prepare and engage participants in capacity-building and developing their own positions with regards to Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, to further develop and implement the Declaration of the Tenth Special Session of the General Assembly, which affirms “that all the peoples of the world have a vital interest in the success of disarmament negotiations and that all States have the right to participate in disarmament negotiations.”

To enable the participants:

  • Strengthen the knowledge, skills and awareness of participants in the areas of disarmament, denuclearization, arms control, and other related issues;
  • Gain an understanding on international programs and agreements that tackle disarmament, such as the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.
  • Discuss recommendations for achieving the objective of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons;
  • Introduce participants to key tenets and the work of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
