Gender intersects migration. Gender roles and expectations impact personal and policy decisions, which feed into and influence the processes of migration. The description “the feminization of migration” is a sharp indication of why gender matters in development and why gender must be a central component of government planning toward sustainable development.

Since the 1990s, the Philippine experience of labour migration, for example, has demanded a clear understanding of the dynamics of gender and international migration. The event aims to:

  1. Deepen the understanding of the importance of a gender perspective in international labour migration and in implementing governmental laws and programs on the rights and development of migrant workers
  2. Integrate gender sensitivity in city plans and programs

At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  1. Apply a gender perspective in analysing migration issues by explaining the interrelationships among gender, social norms and roles, social relations, and the decisions and processes of migration;
  2. Differentiate between productive and reproductive work and explain potential sources of gender inequality related to these; and
  3. Explain the rationale and provisions of international and national laws protecting and promoting the rights of women and migrant workers, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The modules of the Dynamics of Gender, Labour Migration, and Sustainable Development are organized into thematic sessions. This training will involve lecture presentations. Learning activities include open discussions, case study presentations, drafting of gender-sensitivity city plans, and assessment exercises.

The training is intended for members of the Quezon City Migration and Development Council. The members are from the following units:
