The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership are committed to implement this plan.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda.  They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what they did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.

The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

This course has been developed in order to help University students studying construction management to understand the Goals and their relationship to the built environment. Therefore helping the world contribute to meeting the UN SDGs and building a better future for all.

On completion of this course students will be able to able to apply the UN Sustainable Development Goals to the built environment.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the development of and need for the UN Sustainable Development Goals

2. Appreciate the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals and Improving the built environment in Australia

3. Address a sustainability issue/s in the built environment with an appropriate solution/s and relate to Sustainable Development Goal/s

4. Make decisions about the retention of cultural heritage adopting current practices and relate to Sustainable Development Goal/s

5. Express in written media supported by an appropriate referencing technique.

Course Content

• Introduction to, discussion of and debate of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

• Applicability of the SDGs to the design and construction of the future built environment

• Evaluation for sustainable urban planning, design and construction to support the SDGs

• Introduction to building/urban environmental evaluation/rating/assessment tools

• Environmental management principles in the construction industry

• Applicability of the SDGs to the protection and conservation of the historic environment

• The role of cultural heritage in environmental protection in Australia

• Introduction to cultural heritage protection and the Burra Charter

• Significance, authenticity, tangible and intangible values in cultural heritage classification.

• Principles of cultural heritage management.

This course is a minimum of 2 contact hours per week for 12 weeks and assessment items specific to the content. Assessable items include report writing, projects, reflective journals and teamwork.

The target audience is those who are studying the Bachelor of Construction Management through the University of Newcastle.

Participants successfully completing the course will receive a UNITAR certificate.
