Objetivos del evento

The overall objective of the programme is to strengthen participants’ capacities to effectively manage and coordinate emergency and disaster situations. 

Specific objectives include: 

  • Enhancing the ability to identify and assess risks of anthropic and technological origin.
  • Strengthening planning and coordination capacities for emergency response.
  • Improving decision-making processes in crisis situations.
  • Developing leadership skills for the direction of emergency operations.
  • Promoting integrated approaches covering prevention, response, and recovery.
Antecedentes

This Master’s programme is an advanced postgraduate course (60 ECTS) offered by the University of Málaga, with the recognition of UNITAR-CIFAL Málaga. It is designed to strengthen institutional and individual capacities in the field of emergency and disaster management through a multidisciplinary approach. 

The programme responds to the increasing complexity of emergency contexts, requiring coordinated, multi-agency responses and integrated planning across prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases. It brings together academic expertise and operational knowledge from key emergency actors, ensuring alignment between theoretical frameworks and practical implementation. 

This Postgraduate Studies programme constitutes a Master’s Degree with 60 ECTS academic credits, which is based on a multidisciplinary vision appropriate to the different resources involved in emergency and disaster situations: health services, social care, security, and rescue forces. It proposes a comprehensive approach to intervention and management in crisis and disaster situations. 

Objetivos del aprendizaje

Upon completion of the programme, participants are expected to: 

 

  • Analyse risk scenarios and apply appropriate assessment methodologies
  • Design and implement emergency planning and response frameworks
  • Coordinate multi-stakeholder operational resources in complex environments
  • Apply technical and technological tools for emergency management
  • Integrate psychosocial and community-based approaches into response mechanisms
  • Demonstrate leadership and operational decision-making capacities in crisis contexts
Contenido y estructura

The programme is structured as a comprehensive capacity development pathway combining thematic modules, practical training, and applied research: 

  1. Anticipation and prevention: preventive culture and emerging risks.
  2. Emergency and disaster management I: planning and response.
  3. New technologies and mechatronics applied to emergencies.
  4. Emergency and disaster management II: operational response.
  5. Critical incidents management.
  6. Emergency and disaster management III: recovery phase.
  7. Psychosocial intervention in crises and disasters
  8. External practical placements.
  9. Research competencias.
  10. Final Master’s thesis. 

 

This structure ensures a progressive acquisition of knowledge, skills, and applied competencies. 

Metodología

The programme follows a blended and practice-oriented learning methodology, combining theoretical instruction with applied training components. 

Key methodological elements include: 

  • Online theoretical modules supporting conceptual understanding
  • Face-to-face sessions focused on applied learning and case-based discussions
  • Scenario-based exercises and simulations reflecting real emergency situations
  • Practical training through external placements with relevant institutions
  • Application of tools and systems used in emergency management
  • Supervised research through the final thesis 

The design ensures the integration of academic knowledge with operational practice and supports competency-based learning outcomes.
