All malaria elimination programmes at national or subnational levels need to be oriented to the activities and dynamic strategies required to achieve interruption of transmission, prevent re-establishment and obtain WHO certification. The curriculum covers all relevant technical areas including, but not limited to: malaria parasite biology, immunology and epidemiology; surveillance and response; case management; vector control and entomological surveillance; chemoprevention; stratification to tailor interventions; and management and planning of an elimination programme.

The curriculum aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate a programme for malaria elimination and prevention of re-establishment of transmission.

  • Explain how the epidemiology of malaria changes as areas approach elimination; 
  • Describe the principles, goals, and key activities and dynamic strategies required to achieve interruption of transmission;
  • Elaborate on the same for preventing transmission re-establishment and achieving WHO certification;
  • Describe the key components of elimination programmes across the principal technical areas;
  • Explain how to manage and plan an elimination programme;
  • Explain how to engage communities, develop multisectoral collaboration and build political commitment for elimination.
