The "Strengthening Capacities in the Use of Geospatial Information for Improved Resilience in Asia-Pacific and Africa" project (2021-2024) aims to develop sustainable capacities and implement tailored geospatial solutions to enhance policy and decision-making processes in resilience building. With the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), UNOSAT leverages technological advances and innovation to improve decision-making in Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Resilience, Environmental Preservation, and Food Security in eight target countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, Lao PDR, Nigeria, Solomon Islands, Uganda, and Vanuatu.

GeoNode is a geospatial content management system, a platform for the management and publication of geospatial data. It brings together mature and stable open-source software projects under a consistent and easy-to-use interface allowing non-specialized users to share data and create interactive maps. Data management tools built into GeoNode allow for integrated creation of data, metadata, and map visualization. Each dataset in the system can be shared publicly or restricted to allow access to only specific users.

The National Land Commission Secretariat (NLCS), Bhutan was in a need of a geospatial data sharing platform to share geospatial data and related information with their stakeholders in much controlled and secure way. Hence, a GeoNode was installed for NLCS at the provided virtual privet server at the government data centre. This training is focused to provide the NLCS staff members with the required knowledge and knowhow to best use the features and functionalities of GeoNode in their day-to-day work.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the basics of GeoNode features and functionalities.
  • Utilise GeoNode to upload and create resources such as datasets, maps, geostories and dashboards.
  • Apply the knowledge of publishing and sharing resources in a controlled manner using user permissions and group permissions for each resource.

This course provided the participants the opportunity to reveal the capabilities of GeoNode and experience themselves with well-designed hands-on exercises. The participants were given an instruction manual to guide them through the hands-on activities. The required geospatial datasets for the hands-on activities were provided. Following modules were discussed in the training.

This is a 1-day full-time online training. This is primarily conducted as an online training, consists with lectures and extensive number of hands-on exercises to experience the real usage of GeoNode geospatial data sharing platform. The participants are encouraged to interact with the resource person as much as possible to clearly understand the concepts. This course is divided into 3 modules, designed in a way to have a balanced approach between theoretical and practical teaching methods consisting of presentations, interactive sessions, and lab exercises

The course is designed to accommodate selected participants by NLCS and other relevant stakeholders with previous remote sensing and/or GIS experience
