Established in 1965, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a principle training arm of the United Nations, working in every region of the world with a mission to develop capacities, enhance global decision-making and support country and regional-level actions for shaping a better future. Currently, UNITAR provides training to approximately 36,000 participants per year in some 500 different training activities and uses both face-to-face and distance learning methodologies. Over the past decade, UNITAR has been actively engaged in enhancing the facilitation of international and regional conferences, meetings and negotiations, public sector work in the context of international affairs, and diplomatic engagement in relation to the United Nations and its System.

At the heart of UNITAR, the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) delivers training and support workshops to address the needs of diplomats, government officials, international civil servants and private sector entities to meet emerging, complex and global challenges.

UNITAR and the Post-2015 Development Agenda

In collaboration with UNDP, UNEP and UN-DESA, UNITAR worked on the post-2015 Development Agenda process, to accompany Member States in their deliberations and discussions as to the articulation and eventual adoption of the 17 development goals. In 2014/15, UNITAR designed, developed and implemented a total of 26 briefings that were delivered to delegates to the United Nations in New York and Geneva and which strengthened diplomats’ knowledge for evidence-based decision making in the formulation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

In this high-level event, the panellists will demystify the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its components. Facilitated by a series of panels and discussions, the conference will provide a dynamic and interactive space where Private Sector companies can discuss and engage means of partnerships and implementation and have more in-depth discussion, as needed. Most importantly they will be offered the opportunity to meet and connect with high-level UN officials, and top private firms.

The main topics which will be covered are the following:

·         What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

·         Why are they relevant for the private sector?

·         How can the private sector profit in contributing to their implementation?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) divided into 169 targets to end poverty, reduce inequality and injustice and tackle climate change by 2030. This new Agenda serves as a milestone in global, national and local development efforts and calls for actions through the help of global partnerships with the Private Sector.

Why does it relate to the Private Sector?

In a rapidly evolving global environment where information is free flowing and easily accessible, companies are exposed to greater risks and different societal expectations. Private Sector organisations are increasingly driven to make use of Corporate Social Responsibility and create “shared values” so as to make efficient use of the resources they rely upon and work in a sustainable manner taking into account the impact they have on surrounding stakeholders.

At the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, we strive to innovate and support the Private Sector, Member States and other actors involved to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. This is why we would like to invite companies or entities for a conference on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and specifically on the “Multi-Stakeholder Partnership” goal, which aims to:

  1. “Enhance the global partnership for sustainable development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilise and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the sustainable development goals in all countries, in particular developing countries”

  2. “Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships”
