During this two-hour briefing organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the Panel will discuss the Outcomes of the WTO’s Bali Package and its implications for the Multilateral Trading System. This Briefing is uniquely designed to equip participants with the practices and competencies required to understand the underlying issues in relation to international trade in a short span of time.

At the end of the briefing, participants should be able to:

• Grasp the implications of the WTO’s Bali Package for the Multilateral Trading System, specifically from the perspective of developing countries and LDCs
• Acquire pragmatic knowledge on the best practices related to international trade
• Assimilate how developing countries and LDCs can benefit from the Bali Package and have greater access to the global market
• Be familiarized with the tools that can be used by developing countries and LDCs in order to move forward in relation to the Bali Package
 
The briefing will be facilitated by prominent experts and involve peer-to-peer learning and active involvement of participants.
The briefing will try to address the following questions:
 
• What are the implications of the WTO’s Bali Package for the Multilateral Trading System?
• How is the role of developing countries and LDCs evolving in relation to international trade?
• How can developing countries and LDCs benefit from the Bali Package and have greater access to the global market?

• Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Acting Director of the Division of Business and Institutional Support and Chief of the Trade Facilitation and Policy for Business Section at the International Trade Centre (ITC)
• Ms. Aileen Kwa, Coordinator of Trade and Development at the South Centre in Geneva
• Mr. Ralf Peters, Economist, Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities (DITC) at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

This briefing is a two-hour event which focuses on improving participants’ appreciation of the Outcomes of the WTO’s Bali Package. It will take the shape of a Panel Discussion which will be led by a moderator and animated by high-level experts and practitioners. At the end of the briefing, there will be an opportunity for Q&A.

This briefing, conducted at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, is designed primarily for Geneva-based trade delegates from Developing Countries and LDCs who would like to improve their knowledge of and access the most-up-to-date information on the Bali Package. A number of seats will be available for international civil servants to participate as observers provided they have received a confirmation of registration.
