Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to revolutionize our world. With the rapid pace of AI’s development and the uncertainty of how the technology will evolve, the establishment of effective and inclusive governance structures for AI is an urgent priority. 

 

In this one-day training, ((Two opportunities to attend: 6th February or 7th February)) participants will gain a deeper understanding of AI technology trends, AI opportunities and risks, and current developments in AI governance both globally and at the UN. This training aims to equip participants with the knowledge needed to engage in various AI-related UN initiatives, in particular, the intergovernmental negotiations on the Global Digital Compact, taking place during the first and second quarters of 2024. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to answer the following questions:

  • What is the current state of AI research and development?

  • What are some of the economic, social and political implications of AI?

  • What makes AI governance particularly challenging?

  • What are some possible approaches that can be used to govern AI?

  • What role can the UN play in governing AI?

  • How does AI fit within the Global Digital Compact?

Morning:

  1. Artificial Intelligence 101:
    This first segment will give participants a solid understanding of AI basics: What is AI? What are the different kinds of AI (e.g., narrow vs general vs super)? Who is developing AI and what is its development trajectory?

  2. AI Risks and opportunities:
    This segment will tackle the implications of AI on our societies and economies by exploring future scenarios, through the lens of sustainable development.

 

Afternoon:

  1. Overview of the current landscape of AI governance:
    This segment will explore what makes AI so challenging to govern, present a summary of some of the current governance initiatives, and elaborate on the potential institutional functions of a multilateral AI governance regime.

  2. The role of the UN in AI governance:
    This segment will provide a space for participants to discuss the role of the UN in addressing AI governance, particularly in the context of the Global Digital Compact.

The methodology of this training will include:

  • Technical presentations

  • Q&A with experts 

  • Small group discussions

  • Scenario building exercises

  • Interactive segments on AI governance and the Global Digital Compact

This course is specifically designed for technical and diplomatic experts of Permanent Missions to the United Nations in New York, in particular those who focus on the Global Digital Compact.

 

There is no prerequisite knowledge required to participate in this training. 

 

A ground pass will be required to access the UNHQ building.
