In mid-September, hundreds of diplomats attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Organization’s main deliberative body. A large proportion of them comes from the capitals and may not be sufficiently familiar with the United Nations. Before taking up their assignments, many of them feel the need for a short but very intensive course on the functions of the General Assembly and its Main Committees. This special briefing focuses on the work of the First Committee dealing with disarmament and international security.

The Special Briefing will focus on the following topics: 1) the First Committee resolutions dealing with nuclear weapons and conventional arms; 2) the activities of UN Regional Centres and developments in Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones; 3) the 2015 NPT Review Conference preparatory process; and 4) the Group of Governmental Experts on Transparency and Confidence-building Measures in Outer Space Activities.

The briefing will feature expert presentations followed by an interactive discussion.

The special briefing is intended primarily for delegates who will cover the First Committee of the General Assembly.
