Communities in Southern Bangladesh are struggling to cope with climate change after a series of devastating cyclones. This workshop will focus on empowering communities to design sustainable communities by applying permaculture principles. 

The course will provide training for community leaders in sustainable village development, support horticultural and organic vegetable production and canal fisheries projects, and build climate change adapted homes across the target areas.  

  • To use permaculture principles as a guide to design sustainable villages.
  • To observe patterns in nature & e.g. seasonal patterns, branching, wave formations etc. and describe their purpose in a natural cycle.
  • To identify the three main factors in sustainable systems (water, soil, diversity).
  • To manage water in a holistic way and identify strategies for increasing absorption and reducing run-off.
  • To design natural buildings integrating zoning and landscape.
  • To produce vermicompost, green manure, green leaf manure
  • To demonstrate the principle "work with nature not against it". 

 The workshop consists of the following modules:

  • Introduction to Permaculture 
  • Permaculture ethics and principles
  • Soil conservation, improving, composting and mulching
  • Ecological agriculture, garden lay-out and kitchen gardens
  • Water and sanitation
  • Forestry, horticulture, plantation, herbs
  • Seed saving and propagation
  • Sustainable Livelihoods
  • Natural fertilizers, vermiculture and its uses
  • Animal rearing and its importance in permaculture
  • Fishery
  • Natural Building and adaptation to climate change

This course is a hands-on course where participants learn both indoors and outdoors. The workshop will be delivered through:

  1. Group training sessions
  2. Presentations
  3. Group discussions
  4. Peer-to-peer learning and experience sharing
  5. Demonstrations
  6. Design Sessions

The beneficiaries of this seminar will be 24 community members and leaders from Dacope and Mongla Upazilas.
