 Central Europe has extensive inland waterways, the majority of which underperform in terms of the utilization of their capacities for freight transport; the transport performance of these waterways is usually very low.

The major reason for the unsatisfactory role which inland navigation plays in coping with the ever growing freight volumes in Central Europe is the lack of functional integration of the ports with their potential hinterland and non-European ports.

 The main aim of the INWAPO project is to activate this unexploited potential of the waterborne transport as well as river and sea ports in Central Europe to achieve a better inter-modality of the inland and sea ports.

To do so, the project will focus on 3 main systems of waterways: the Northern Adriatic ports (Venice, Trieste and Koper), the Danube river ports (Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, Komarno and Sturovo), the Czech and Polish inland waterways (the Elbe, Vistula and Oder systems), and the Baltic ports.
Project Objectives
·         to identify the causes of the unexploited potential of the waterborne transport and to  propose solution strategies aiming at its activation;
·         to promote a better integration of different transport modes in Central Europe, with special attention to investments in inter-modal solution;
·         to ensure the development of Central Europe’s tri-modal transport hubs;
·         to support the activation of new transport services along the Danube river (rail and river connections)

 This conference will enable participants to:

·         learn about the attractiveness of the waterborne transport by improving the efficiency of the river and sea ports, fostering the freight traffic along waterways, and strengthening the integration of the port infrastructure in the logistics chain.

·         formulate the best strategies for enhancing the development of sustainable transport.

 The program is divided into thematic modules, case studies sessions and group discussions aimed at optimising the exchange of practical knowledge.
