The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) plays a crucial role in accelerating global efforts towards disaster risk reduction to achieve inclusive sustainable development. As the lead agency within the United Nations system for coordinating disaster risk reduction, UNDRR offers an e-learning course titled "Risk Assessment for National Planning Processes".

Better decisions about risk require a deeper understanding of its complexities and relationships with sustainable development. UNDRR collect, collate, and share the latest high quality technical information and data about reducing risk and building resilience more effectively. UNDRR works closely with countries to help them build and strengthen integrated systems to manage risk and implement evidence-based policies in a way that mainstreams DRR across all areas of governance at the local, national and regional levels.

This course serves as a valuable resource, equipping participants with the necessary knowledge to understand the benefits of risk analysis in supporting and integrating disaster risk reduction and risk assessment into national planning processes.

The e-learning course aims to strengthen the capacities of participants in the application of forward-looking and evidence-based analyses in national planning processes.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the value of risk assessment in national planning processes.
  • Plan for the integration of improved risk assessment in planning documents.
  • Identify and use tools to enrich risk assessment

The course contains the following sections:

1. Understanding Risk.

  • Why are risk data and analysis important?
  • Understanding interconnected and cascading risks.

2. UNDRR services and tools on risk analysis

  • Assembling evidence base for risk analysis.
  • Build data literacy capacities across the nexus.
  • Breaking silos by conducting risk analysis.
  • Bespoke analysis and technical support.

This is a facilitated, interactive course. The course contains the following components:

  1. Interactive lessons. They introduce you to the conceptual foundations of the different modules in an interactive manner.
  2. Further resources. These are key documents related to Disaster Risk Reduction and risk analysis that complement the interactive lessons.
