UN Secretary-General Engages in Dialogue with his Special Representatives
11 – 13 May, 2012 -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed heads of UN peace missions and peacekeeping operations around the world at the Eighth Seminar for Special and Personal Representatives of the Secretary-General. In a dialogue session to discuss priorities and strategies, the Secretary-General recognized the crucial and challenging work being carried out by his senior United Nations peacemakers and stressed the critical importance of preventive diplomacy. CIFAL Jeju hosts training on Low-Carbon Cities: Green Growth for Local Governments in the Asia-Pacific Region.
2-4 May, Jeju, South Korea. Delegations from over eleven regional countries convened for CIFAL Jeju in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. It is the 5th training to take place, in a series to build local government capacities on green growth and low-carbon cities in the Asia-Pacific Region. CIFAL Jeju is part of UNITAR’s global network of nine CIFAL training centres for sustainable local development. it's mandate is to develop capacities among regional local governments in the areas of ‘Green Growth’ and ‘Human Security’. New Record for Enrollment in e-Learning Course on the Global Commons
26 April 2012, Geneva, Switzerland – Registration for the first Introductory e-Learning Course to the Global Commons, with more than three hundred seventy participants from all over the world enrolled, is terminated. The course is free of charge for participants and has been developed by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Humanitarian Rapid Mapping activations have increased in 2011
Figures from UNOSAT reports indicate that the humanitarian community relied on UNOSAT mapping more in 2011 than in the previous year. Since its creation in 2003 the service has been active in over 200 large crises, in 2011 UNOSAT undertook 28 rapid mapping activities. Read More

Staying Connected to Promote Sustainable Development
4 May 2012, New York, United States—UNITAR New York Office organized a half-day workshop on Connectedness and Sustainability as part of its Rio Preparation Forum in collaboration with the Digital Energy and Sustainability Solutions Campaign (DESSC). The workshop highlighted the possibilities of social media and ICTs as “enablers of change” for sustainable development as well as instruments for outreach and raising awareness on sustainability issues.
