Background
Join us on Thursday, 24 November 2022 for a unique opportunity to listen to Woman Diplomats and Leaders on sustainable development who have had an exceptional public service path in economics, the rights of women, national politics, international relations, education, and environmental conservation. They will share their impressions on how global rules are impacting development on the ground. The side event will be held during the UNCTAD Trade and Development Commission Session (Palais des Nations, Geneva, 21 - 25 November 2022 and live streaming).
Background
The UNCTAD Trade and Development Commission provides an opportunity to host a side-event that complements the Commission theme and showcases local, regional and global woman leaders across public and private sectors who positively contribute to more sustainable communities worldwide. Shedding light on the realities and challenges faced on the ground, particularly through a gender lens, is imperative especially for developing countries, as it will help develop solutions which positively impact local populations as much as the world at large, and help create a more inclusive environment.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine crisis have significantly impacted the global economy, with many companies continuing to face disruption and loss. The United Nations Global Crisis Response Group (GCRG) has clearly elaborated the challenges caused by these cascading crises and called for policy measures to address them. Learning from the ongoing crises and looking into how to mitigate severe damage to key economic sectors in the future is vital. In this context, the side event will explore whether global trade, finance, and investment are in need of a renewed framework. The importance of such a discussion has been made evident in numerous gatherings, especially in the annual and half-yearly meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank as well as in political (G7, G20), business (World Economic Forum) and academic gatherings across the globe.
Content and Structure
Roundtable topic: What could be done urgently to adapt the framework and conditions that govern international trade, finance, investment, and technology transfer under the current circumstances?
The Geneva roundtable discussion has invited women ambassadors from the diplomatic community in Geneva who are leaders and responsible for fostering Sustainable Development. The names of speakers will be posted online in the coming days.
Other questions to be discussed will include:
- The spectre of a global recession looming over the world economy in the midst of high and variable inflation and mounting fiscal deficits, international trade disruptions, open, civil and international, armed conflicts, unrelenting natural catastrophes, and a notable deterioration of the purchasing power of workers, decent work creation, and the quantity and quality of food intake in many countries;
- The escalation of illicit economic activities, many linked to outright illegal actions led by organised crime groups seemingly unchecked;
- The evident insufficiency of systemic governance institutions to curtail the action of disruptive forces that challenge the stability of markets through speculative moves and price and quantity manipulations in the supply and demand of key commodities, products and services; and
- Public opinion disenchantment with policy proposals that are incompatible with democratic rule and citizen control of governmental decision-making; and the like.
