Background

In mid-September, hundreds of diplomats attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Organization main deliberation body.  A large proportion of them comes from the capitals and may not be sufficiently familiar with the United Nations.  Before taking up their assignments, many of them feel the need for a short but very intensive course on the functions of the General Assembly and its methods of work.  The general briefing which attracts hundreds of participants, aim at providing such information to new delegates to the General Assembly.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the general briefing, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the procedures of the General Assembly;
  • Identify the main issues before the Assembly;
  • Understand the structure and identification of resolutions and other documents of the Assembly;
  • Find and use the various services available to delegates. 

 

 

Content and Structure

Participants review the procedures, agenda and documentation of the General Assembly and the working methods and major issues before the General Assembly. They are also provided with practical information on the various services available to delegations.

Interpretation will be provided, to the extent possible, in the official languages of the United Nations.

Methodology

 

Presentations are made by experienced diplomats and members of the United Nations Secretariat, Protocol, DGACM, Office of Legal Counsel, DHL.

 

 

Targeted Audience

This course is open to all members of the Permanent Missions accredited to United Nations Headquarters and other government officials; representatives of international, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, and other interested individuals. The briefings are primarily designed for delegates who attend a session of the General Assembly for the first time.   

Additional Information

 

The course participation fee is 250 USD. Diplomats from least developed countries (LDCs) and developing countries are eligible to apply for a fellowship. If you wish to apply for a fellowship (fee-waiver), please contact the UNITAR New York Office (nyo [at] unitar.org (nyo[at]unitar[dot]org)) upon completion of online registration. 

Diplomats may pay individually per course attended, or their country may wish to cover the costs of an annual subscription of $10,500. An annual subscription will ensure free access, at each workshop and special training, for up to 5 diplomats of the Permanent Missions in New York and representatives of foreign governments for the full range of UNITAR CDT courses in 2012. Important: Participation will be confirmed once payment is received. Participants are required to make payment by credit card or wire transfer. UNITAR reserves the right to rescind an applicant's enrolment at any time in case of non-receipt of payment.

All participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a UNITAR Certificate of Completion.
