Background

The Study-Trip and Workshop III is the culminating event of the Fellowship Cycle and a unique opportunity to expose Afghan Fellows and Coaches to Japan - its society, culture, science and technology as well as post-war reconstruction history. Workshop III of the 2009 Cycle focuses on Leading Change in Organizations - Change strategies, project implementation and team management as key requirements of the professional environment in Afghanistan.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of this workshop are to enhance the leadership capacities of senior to mid-level professionals in public service, by giving them a set of tools for leading, managing and successfully implementing change within their organizations, or spheres of influence. The aim is for the Fellows to be introduced to leadership strategies for implementing organizational change and then develop complete implementation plans for the change projects they have developed through the Fellowship Cycle.

Content and Structure

The Study-Trip includes visits to cultural sites, public welfare facilities and institutions in Hiroshima and and Kyoto.  The topics of the workshop include, inter alia:  

  • Leadership and change - theories and approaches;
  • Team development review and tools for team performance evaluation;
  • Process of implementation and communication of change projects.

In order to graduate from the programme, the Fellows are required to make final presentations on projects they have been working on throughout the Fellowship period, and receive feedback and recommendations from the UNITAR panel and peers.

Methodology

The Study-Trip includes a hands-on workshop and meetings with academics and experts from various fields, as well as study visits to cultural sites, public welfare facilities and institutions in Hiroshima and Osaka.  The workshop itself is an intensive and interactive event, structured around elements of leadership and change, with the support of mentoring teams through the project implementation process, and requires Fellows to work in groups on exercises assigned by resource persons.

Multiple training methodologies such as case-studies, after-action review, peer review during sessions and in follow-up, debriefings and group work, and role playing are used. In addition a hi-level Public Roundtable is used to close the Cycle with post-conflict reconstruction issues.

Targeted Audience

The workshops are specifically designed to meet the needs of the Fellows and Coaches (mid to senior-level officials from the public, non-profit and academic sectors) of the current Cycle in the UNITAR Fellowship for Afghanistan.

Additional Information

Upon successful completion of the workshop (attendance at all sessions/exercises is required) and meeting of the prior Fellowship requirements, the Fellows will be awarded a Certificate of Completion for the Fellowship Cycle, as well as a certificate from the University of Texas at Austin for graduate academic credits earned for this programme.  The working language of the training workshop is English.

The Study-Trip to Hiroshima and Workshop III is jointly organized by UNITAR and its partners Hiroshima Prefecture and Hiroshima City.
