CIFAL Newcastle - Sustainability Day
Background
The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership are committed to implement this plan.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what they did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.
The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.
This event has been developed specifically to help Gloucester High School students engage with the UN SDGS and the future of sustainable development.
Event Objectives
This event aims to provide an overview the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will focus on the local geographical region as a case study for the challenges and opportunities in building a sustainable future.
Learning Objectives
On successful completion of this workshop, students will be able to:
- Explain the development of the UN SDGs and their function in guiding sustainable development activities
- Identify the different stakeholders and societal systems in dealing with the challenge of achieving a sustainable future
- Apply the understanding of the SDGs and sustainable development and contextualise it to the local geographical region of Gloucester and Hunter Region
- Practice scenario planning and futures thinking
Content and Structure
This event has two distinct parts. The first part involves a public lecture aiming to provide an overview of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whilst also looking towards building a sustainable future, specifically in the Gloucester school community and hunter region.
The second part, involves interactive workshops in which students will be able to able to apply the SDG’s to their geographical location and identify stakeholders and societal systems, policies and procedures in dealing with the challenge of sustainable development.
Methodology
The Gloucester High School Sustainability Day includes a public lecture on the UN SDGs. This is followed by an interactive workshop facilitated by the disaster risk reduction academics from the University of Newcastle. Through the workshop, students will participate in the scenario planning and futures thinking which includes role-plays, case studies, presentations and teamwork.
Targeted Audience
The target audience is comprised of students of Gloucester High School.
