Background

The unique working environment of peace operations requires a specific set of skills and knowledge for successful mandate’s implementation. The mission’s structure involves the cooperation of many individuals that come from a variety of cultural, political, religious and educational backgrounds. Despite the broad range of personalities involved in a peace operation, all individuals work towards a common goal. To achieve an efficient and productive collaborative effort, leadership, team work and team management skills are essential.

Event Objectives

The goal of this course is to provide participants with an overview of theories and practices related to leadership, teamwork and team management, applicable to the specific context of a peace operation.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply theories of leadership and team management in the context of a peace operation;
  • Summarize features of effective leadership;
  • Utilize techniques for effective team building and team work;
  • Identify personal strengths as a leader and the areas of potential development;
  • Apply conflict management and problem solving skills.

Content and Structure

The course is composed of four modules that will be covered over four weeks:

  • Module 1: Introduction to management
  • Module 2: Effective leadership
  • Module 3: Team building, team management and team work
  • Module 4: Problem diagnosing and problem solving

The average workload per week is estimated at 8 hours per week.
 

Methodology

The course is based on the synergy of theory and practice. The conceptual foundations of leadership and team management are laid out through lessons. Taking advantage of the opportunities of technology-enhanced learning, the learning materials are presented through various media, such as text, images and video material, which contribute to better retention and enhance the learning process. The concepts learned will be applied in scenario-based activities, which allow participants to solve challenges in realistic situations. Interaction is a core component of this course, as participants are required to share experiences, discuss point of views through multiple forum discussions. Self-assessment tools are available for participants to discover their leadership style. Participants will be assessed based on their performance in the scenario-based activities.   Taking advantage of the opportunities of technology-enhanced learning, the learning materials are presented through various media, such as text, images and video material, which contribute to better retention and enhance the learning process. Facilitators guide participants through this process, delivering and conveying information, clarifying doubts and supporting participants through different activities.

Targeted Audience

The course is open exclusively to United Nations Volunteers, holding a valid contract. Please note that a verfication will be carried out by UNVs Programme prior to the beginning of the course. Only those participants for whom possession of a valid contract is confirmed will be enrolled in the course.

No reimboursement will be possible for participants who enroll without a valid UNV contract.
