World Heritage Nominations: Justification for Inscription
Background
The UNITAR Series on the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites, launched in 2003, has thus far comprised twelve annual Workshops held in Hiroshima and one in-country Workshop in India. The Series, with over 380 Alumni to date, offers a set of innovative approaches to heritage conservation, including:
- The fusion of cultural and natural heritage management;
- The recognition of both the tangible and intangible aspects of heritage sites;
- Focused analysis on specific areas of the nomination process.
Learning Objectives
- Review the key elements of the World Heritage Convention, incorporating updates and current trends;
- Discuss the main tools available for practitioners within the World Heritage regime;
- Outline justification requirements within the nomination process;
- Analyse the principles and objectives of the World Heritage Convention;
- Compare the criteria utilized within the World Heritage Convention;
- Describe the Operational Guidelines of the World Heritage Convention;
- Examine best practices and lessons learned in preparing nominations;
- Review key elements of the nomination and evaluation processes;
- Through reality-based practical exercises, outline key concepts and common issues for given sites.
Content and Structure
Participants in the 2016 Workshop will receive targeted training on the following:
- World Heritage Convention: Principles and Objectives;
- World Heritage Convention: Operational Guidelines.
- World Heritage: Main Tools;
- World Heritage Nomination and Evaluation Processes: From Tentative List to Committee’s Decision;
- World Heritage Nominations: Format;
- World Heritage Nominations: Justification;
- World Heritage Nominations: Tips on Writing and Preparing the File.
Methodology
The methodological approach of the Workshop contains the following elements:
INTERACTIVE LECTURES
Lectures will be delivered by experts with key insight, experience and expertise working with UNITAR, UNESCO, IUCN, and ICOMOS, and will provide both an overview of the World Heritage regime, incorporating current trends and discourse, while examining in detail the justification requirements of nominations.
STUDY TOURS
Underscoring the theoretical introductions and analyses presented, Study Tours form an integral part of the training methodologies utilised by UNITAR. Visits will be made to the World Heritage Atomic Bomb Dome and its attendant museum, as well as to the World Heritage Itsukushima Shinto Shrine.
PRACTICAL EXERCISE
Key to the facilitation of learning at the Workshop is a major Practical Exercise whereby participants work in small groups to analyse real world Case Studies and apply the theoretical and practical knowledge gained in the Workshop.
Targeted Audience
The participants (up to 30) will consist of:
- Those involved in the preparation of World Heritage nominations;
- Potential or current World Heritage site managers;
- Natural/cultural conservation specialists and trainers;
- Decision makers and government officers; and
- Representatives of academic institutions, think-tanks, and civil society.
