Background

As a landlocked mountainous country and as one of the least developed economies of Central Asia, Tajikistan is highly vulnerable to various impacts of climate change, especially when considering mountainous ecosystems, availability of water resources and food security. The country’s vulnerability calls for more active participation in the international climate change process and determines the necessity for decisive actions at a national level in order to adapt to and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. Tajikistan has ratified the UNFCCC in 1998 and the Kyoto Protocol in 2008, and has recently started exploring opportunities for taking on a low emission development path. Since 2010, the country has been a leading member of the group of Mountain Landlocked Developing Countries (MLDC) at UNFCCC negotiations.

Event Objectives

This Climate Change Media Event follows the Second National Workshop on the Outcomes of the UNFCCC COP 19, held on 17-18 February 2014, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It is designed to initiate a dialogue between policy-makers and the public. It provides a useful starting point for awareness raising and engagement across the Tajik society, as well as discussions between the national government and mass media on further steps for Tajikistan in the framework of UNFCCC obligations.
