Background

While the Charter of the United Nations has often been regarded as the constitution of the Organization, resolutions adopted by its principal organs may be considered as its laws. Hence, the need for accuracy, respect of the correct terminology and search for the proper expression. Over the years, the United Nations resolutions have acquired a distinctive style. Furthermore, the rules relating to the adoption of resolutions have been supplemented by a number of practices. This workshop aims at providing thorough training on all these topics.

Event Objectives

The main objectives of this workshop are to familiarize the participants with the structure and form of United Nations resolutions and decisions, to help them to improve their skills in the drafting of resolutions and to enable them to acquire a better knowledge of the rules and practices relating to the adoption of resolutions.
 
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
 
· Describe the structure and form of United Nations resolutions and decisions;
· Apply their improved understanding and enhanced skills when drafting resolutions;
· Identify the rules and practices relating to the adoption of resolutions.
 

Content and Structure

The workshop will consist of three parts: the structure and drafting of resolutions and decisions; the decision making and adoption of resolutions; and, the drafting of a resolution, through a simulation exercise.

Methodology

 A large part of the workshop is devoted to practical drafting exercises. In view of the limited duration of the workshop, active involvement of participants is required throughout the course.

Targeted Audience

This course is open to Members of permanent missions accredited to United Nations Headquarters and other government officials; representatives of international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
