Background

The APRU Certificate in Global Climate Change Leadership is a flagship experiential learning programme designed to equip students with a deep understanding of climate change and global governance.

The programme leverages interactive simulation tools such as the World Climate Simulation (C-ROADS), enabling participants to role-play as international stakeholders and negotiate climate solutions.

It brings together students from across APRU member universities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-cultural exchange while addressing one of the most pressing global challenges, climate change.

Event Objectives

• To build foundational and applied knowledge of climate change science and policy

• To provide insights into global climate governance frameworks (e.g., UNFCCC, Paris Agreement)

• To develop leadership and negotiation skills in the context of climate diplomacy

• To promote systems thinking in addressing climate mitigation and adaptation challenges

• To foster international collaboration and cross-cultural understanding

Content and Structure

The programme is structured over 4 weeks and includes:

• Introductory session on climate science, policy, and simulation tools

• Delegation-based group work across universities

• Two major climate negotiation simulation sessions

• Expert lectures and curated learning materials

• Final reflections and synthesis discussions

Total workload includes approximately:

• 10 hours of live sessions

• 3 hours of self-paced learning

• 2 hours of group collaboration

Methodology

• Simulation-based learning (World Climate Simulation using C-ROADS model)

• Experiential and role-based negotiation exercises

• Interdisciplinary teamwork

• Facilitated discussions and expert-led sessions

• Blended learning (live + asynchronous content)

Targeted Audience

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from APRU member universities

• Students from disciplines including sustainability, public policy, business, engineering, health, and social sciences

• Individuals with interest in climate change, sustainability, and global governance

Approximately 100–150 participants across APRU member universities.

This endorsement is for the 15 students from NTU Singapore who will be attending this program.

Additional Information

This programme aligns strongly with CIFAL Singapore’s thematic focus on climate change and sustainability and contributes to capacity building in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The programme also supports NTU’s commitment to interdisciplinary, globally engaged education and provides students with practical exposure to real-world climate negotiation processes.
