Background

The primary obstacle to progress on SDG 6 is “fragmented delivery systems,” highlighting four operational levers for acceleration: governance coherence, predictable finance, actionable data, and resilient infrastructure.

Event Objectives

The outcomes of the 42nd UN-Water Meeting provide a clear strategic direction and collaborative blueprint for the UN system to confront the global water crisis, ensuring that water serves as the foundation for peace, resilience, and sustainable development.

As the 42nd UN-Water Meeting host, UNITAR’s Global Water Academy remains committed to strengthening global water governance and accelerating the achievement of SDG 6 through capacity-building.

Content and Structure

The meeting reviewed progress since the 41st UN-Water Meeting and assessed implementation of past decisions.

  • Discussions were structured around the five entry points of the UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation, covering collective action, country engagement, policy alignment, SDG 6 acceleration, and accountability.
  • Participants considered updates and draft decisions on Priority Collaborative Actions (PCAs), the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2026, World Water Day 2026, and preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference.
  • The programme combined information sessions and decision-making segments.
  • Day 1 focused on strategic and programmatic discussions in an open session.
  • Day 2 included a high-level Member States Briefing and Dialogue, followed by a closed session addressing governance, partnerships, finances, budget allocations, and adoption of decisions.
