Background

Learning is only effective when all participants can access it, engage meaningfully and benefit equitably. Yet training programmes often unintentionally create barriers related to disability, gender, power dynamics, culture or context.

This course introduces Inclusive Learning Design as a practical, rights-based approach grounded in the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy and UNITAR’s Inclusivity and Gender frameworks. It equips learning professionals and project managers with tools to identify barriers early and design accessible, respectful and impactful learning experiences that truly leave no one behind.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Mainstream gender, inclusivity and disability inclusion into training design and delivery
  • Apply the inclusivity lenses accross the training cycle, from analysis to evaluation
  • Integrate inclusive best practices into learning environments, materials and facilitation approaches
  • Apply do no harm principles to avoid unintended negative consequences in training design and implementation

Content and Structure

The course is structured around the training cycle and includes nine short lessons. It introduces key concepts related to inclusivity, intersectionality, and disability inclusion, followed by practical guidance on applying inclusive learning design across key phases of the training cycle, from analysis to evaluation.

After completing the lessons, participants can access a final quiz to obtain the certificate of completion. Course navigation is non-linear: participants may choose which lessons to engage with based on their needs, and completion of all content is not required to access the final assessment.

Methodology

The course uses a learner-centred and applied approach, combining:

  • Short, accessible learning units
  • Scenario-based activities
  • Concrete examples from training practice
  • Guided reflection
  • Downloadable tools for immediate use

The learning experience is designed to be accessible, flexible, and respectful of different learning needs and contexts.

Targeted Audience

This course is designed for:

  • Learning professionals and instructional designers
  • Trainers and facilitators
  • Project managers and programme officers
  • UN staff, partners, and practitioners involved in training and capacity-building

No prior expertise in inclusivity or disability inclusion is required.
