Background

The Community-based Research Laboratory (CBRL) is a knowledge hub created by Dr. Jutta Gutberlet in 2005 and located in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria. CBRL hosts a group of researchers and students that are committed to participatory oriented and community-based research in Canada and around the world. 

Our Vision is to bridge global challenges with local actions, effecting sustainable change through collaborative partnerships with universities, government, civil society, NGOs, business sector, and grassroots initiatives to improve the livelihoods of individuals and communities.  

Our Mission is to conduct and engage in participatory action research with community members in order to achieve progressive social, economic and environmentally sustainable and transformative change. 

Event Objectives

The objectives of the weekly conversation meetings are to bring our community together to share stories, present and discuss research developments, and learn from one another. 

To develop critical thinking skills  

To identify commonalities across CBPR projects and discuss successes and challenges  

To build capacity in community based and community led research methods and engagement

Mar 14, 2025 -  Feminist Counter-Mapping as an Act of Reclaiming Spaces 

March 21, 2025 – For Nelson First Nation-Owned Tu deh-Kah Geothermal Project: A case study of community perceptions & support 

March 28, 2025 – Challenges of Plastic Circularity: Analysis of Discard in Cooperatives in Greater Sao Paulo 

April 18, 2025 – Imagining Other Ways of Producing Clothes - A Study of Handmade Textiles Know-How in Light of the Decolonial Perspective
