Background

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established in 2015, serve as “a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.” Education is a key catalyst for individual well-being and overall societal development moving forward with the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Goal 4 Quality Education articulates the need to ensure inclusive and equitable education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. As such, higher education institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in the implementation of the 17 SDGs through awareness-raising, capacity building and training, knowledge transfers, knowledge transformation, and knowledge translation.   The University of the Philippines-Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders (UP-CIFAL) Philippines offers the Sustainable Development Goals for Higher Education (SDGs4HE). This orientation is meant for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), their faculty administrators, staff, and students to familiarize themselves with the basis and objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially concerning Higher Education. This orientation aims to introduce and embed the 17 SDGs of the United Nations into the higher education institutions’ functions which are teaching, research, and community extension.
