The project “Strengthening Capacities in the Use of Geospatial Information for Improved Resilience in Asia-Pacific and Africa” (2021-2024) intends to develop sustainable capacities and implement ad-hoc and tailored geospatial solutions. With support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), this 3-year long project aims to enhance capacities by leveraging technological advances and innovation and providing integrated geospatial solutions for improved decision making in the fields of Land Management, Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Resilience, and Environmental Preservation in the eight target countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, Lao PDR, Nigeria, Solomon Islands, Uganda, and Vanuatu. In Bhutan, UNOSAT aims to deliver innovative capacity development solutions and geospatial services by integrating data, technology, knowledge, and people - custom-tailored to the needs of the National Land Commission Secretariat (NLCS) for Sustainable Land Management.

In this training, UNOSAT aims to address NLCS’s need to increase capacity on the use of Cloud GIS. NLCS maintains the cadastral data in an ArcGIS Geodatabase and has lot of experience working with ArcGIS Desktop. This is not the situation with cloud GIS, particularly ArcGIS Enterprise. Despite having an ArcGIS Enterprise license, NLCS was unable to use it to perform its mandates of maintaining and disseminating the rich geospatial data in its repository. This is mainly because NLCS was not prepared and lacked the necessary expertise to utilize ArcGIS Enterprise. NLSC needs the support of UNITAR in developing the internal capacity to utilize the ArcGIS Enterprise to carry out the above objectives.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

1.     Recall the components and structure of Cloud GIS;

2.     Apply various methods and functionalities of GIS software (ArcGIS) to share data on the cloud;

3.     Build a WebMap and applications using Web AppBuilder and Interactive Dashboard.

This introductory training aims to provide participants with lectures on key concepts on ArcGIS on the Cloud GIS through practical exercises. By the end of this training, participants should be able to share GIS content on the cloud, create a web map, and build an application.

Modality: This is a blended technical training with remote lecturers and in person technical support. This course will consist of lectures and GIS lab exercises using GIS datasets and real case scenarios.

Expected Workload: 4 hours

The course is designed to accommodate selected participants from NLCS with relevant background. UNITAR is committed to ensure gender parity in all the learning events and highly encourage female experts from NLCS to join. The criteria of selection include:

  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise;
  • Commitment to use the knowledge and skills acquired to support NLCS operations.
