Contexte

Mexico's high seismic activity makes earthquake preparedness essential for airports. Seismic events can affect airport infrastructure, safety and operational continuity. Organized by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), this seminar provides airport management and operational teams with technical knowledge on seismic risk, infrastructure vulnerability and emergency response to support prevention, preparedness and the timely recovery of airport operations.

Objectifs du cours

The seminar aims to strengthen seismic risk awareness and a culture of prevention and resilience in airport facilities. It promotes the exchange of good practices for earthquake preparedness, response and recovery, and supports coordinated action to protect airport infrastructure and restore operations promptly after a seismic event.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

By the end of the seminar, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe basic earthquake concepts, behaviour and key measurement parameters.
  2. Recognize patterns of seismic activity and seismic zoning in Mexico.
  3. Identify airport infrastructure and critical elements vulnerable to earthquakes.
  4. Identify preparedness and response measures applicable to airports.
  5. Explain key aspects of evacuation, damage assessment and the recovery of airport operations.
  6. Identify considerations for maintaining operational continuity during a seismic emergency.

Contenu et structure

Three 45-minute technical sessions cover: (1) earthquakes in Mexico, seismic behaviour and monitoring; (2) airport vulnerability, critical infrastructure and resilience, including the Oaxaca Airport expansion case; and (3) preparedness, evacuation, damage assessment, reopening and operational continuity. Presentations are followed by questions and answers.

Méthodologie

Delivered virtually through three specialist-led technical presentations. Methods include explanations of seismic concepts, analysis of cases relevant to airports, presentation of good practices for prevention and emergency response, and exchange of participants' experiences. A question-and-answer session follows the presentations.

Audience cible

Airport executives and airport operational personnel.
