The Airports and Economic Development Global Training Programme comprises four strategic two- day intensive workshops scheduled throughout 2025, strategically distributed across key global regions: Africa, North America, Asia, and Latin America. Each workshop delivers comprehensive training on critical aspects of airport development, including sustainable competitiveness strategies, advanced cargo logistics, innovative non-aeronautical revenue approaches, integrated safety management systems, and environmental sustainability frameworks, among others.
The Atlanta workshop focuses on two interconnected priority areas critical to modern airports: Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness. This strategic focus leverages Atlanta’s position as a global leader in airport management, home to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume. The workshop brings together a diverse cohort of high- level stakeholders and senior airport officials from across the Americas, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange and sustainable airport development initiatives.

Airports serve as striking nexus points for global innovation and sustainable development, playing a transformative role in shaping resilient regional economies. This transformative potential is powerfully exemplified by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA), which generates an economic impact of over $32.5 billion for metropolitan Atlanta and $68.3 billion for the state of Georgia, illustrating the profound capacity of airports as catalysts for sustainable regional growth.
In response to this significant potential, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has established the Airports and Economic Development Global Training Programme. This initiative is supported through a strategic partnership with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA) and the Georgia Institute of Technology, along with its Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2), bringing together world-class expertise in airport management and technological innovation to create a comprehensive framework for sustainable airport development.
The programme operates through close collaboration with UNITAR's International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) Global Network, specifically engaging five strategic centres across key global regions: CIFAL Atlanta (United States), CIFAL Merida (Mexico), CIFAL Miami (United States), CIFAL Singapore (Singapore), and CIFAL York (Canada). This extensive network ensures comprehensive geographical coverage and facilitates robust knowledge exchange across diverse airport contexts.
